Why hasn't a pulse appeared?

Updated 4 minutes to read

On this page

Nearly always one of two things: The GAiGE isn't allowed on all sites yet, or nothing is due.

First, the step most people missLink to this section

The extension needs your permission to put a pulse on the website you're working on. It's optional, and the extension starts without it.

To allow it:

  1. Click the G icon in your browser toolbar
  2. Under Pulses and notices, press Allow on all sites
  3. Choose Allow when your browser asks

From then on, pulses appear where you're working.

Why it asks for so muchLink to this section

Pulses run on a schedule, not on visits to a particular website. When one comes due it has to appear on whatever website you have open at that moment, and that could be any website at all: your email, a document, a news site. The browser has one permission for "any website", so that's the one the extension has to ask for. Your browser describes it as "Read and change all your data on all websites".

What it does with that permission is put a pulse, or a notice about an AI tool, on the page, and it reads nothing there. With or without it, the extension checks each page's address on your device; the address never leaves your device. What data is collected about you has the detail.

What you see until you allow itLink to this section

Your pulses wait in the extension's panel, under Waiting on you, and you can answer them in your AI Adoption Portal too. If you press Start on one in the panel, it says "To show pulses on this website, allow The GAiGE on all sites.", with Allow on all sites under it.

If your browser doesn't askLink to this section

If your browser doesn't show the question, or you said no, the panel says "Access to all sites is still off." Press How to turn it on for the steps to allow it from your browser's own extension settings.

Second: nothing may be dueLink to this section

Pulses arrive on a schedule your organisation sets. The AI Pulse is three times a week per tool; the AI Review is fortnightly, and the AI Capability Check monthly. Between those, there's nothing to show you.

The exact times vary. Each one is placed inside its own part of the week, at least 30 minutes from the next, and kept inside working hours (Monday to Friday, 9:30am to 4pm, unless your organisation has set a different window). That way pulses are spread out rather than arriving together.

If you'd rather not wait, open the extension's panel. Anything due sits under Waiting on you, and you can press Start. To add something between pulses, select Give feedback, where your organisation offers it. Anything due is also under Waiting on you in your AI Adoption Portal.

The other reasons, in orderLink to this section

  • You're on a page no extension can show anything on. Browser settings (chrome://, edge://, about:) and the extension stores are off limits to every extension, not just ours. If you press Start there, the panel says "Pulses can't appear on browser pages." A pulse due while you're on one waits for the next check, a minute later.
  • You're not signed in. The panel will say so. Nothing is scheduled until it knows who you are.
  • You're not assigned the tool. Your admin decides who is asked about what. No assignment means no pulse for that tool, and an admin can fix it in a minute.
  • You snoozed everything. The panel shows how long is left, with a Resume button.
  • You closed the last one. Closing a pulse with the × puts it aside for a week. It's still in the panel if you'd like it back sooner.

What won't cause itLink to this section

Visiting or not visiting an AI tool's website makes no difference to pulses. They aren't triggered by where you browse, so you don't need to open ChatGPT to be asked about ChatGPT, and being on a tool's site won't bring a pulse forward. (When you open an AI tool's website, the extension may show what your organisation has decided about the tool. That's a notice, not a pulse.)

If none of the above explains it, have a word with whoever set The GAiGE up at your organisation. They can see whether the pulse is running, how often it's set to appear, and whether you're assigned to the tool.
